"Hurricane Chuck" Exercise Held

On April 15th Broward County Emergency Management hosted an exercise designed to test the communications capabilities between the EOCs in each municipality in the county and the Broward County EOC. Although this was not a general drill for the ham community to check in and send simulated messages as we normally do, the RACES staff was asked to participate, and some municipal EOC’s invited their local hams to participate at municipal EOCs as one of the communications mechanisms to be used.

A gallery with some pictures of the event is on our Facebook page.

October Meeting Report

October’s meeting was a special treat! This month we met at the Broward County Emergency Operations Center, where we learned how the radio traffic that is passed during an actual disaster is routed through an emergency management software program to the appropriate agency. Following the meeting, attendees had a tour of the EOC and Mobile Command Vehicle.

Special thanks to Miguel Ascarrunz, Director of Broward County Emergency Management Division, and Jim Calcanes WB4JC, Broward EOC Staff, for speaking to us and giving us the tour!

Meeting Location Change for October

Broward County ARES-RACES will hold their monthly meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at the Broward County Emergency Operations Center, 201 NW 84 Ave., Plantation, FL 33324. The meeting will begin at 7:30 pm, however, we are asking that everyone arrive early so that we can get all participants signed in at the front desk.

We will be showing our radio operators how information received by the ham radio operators, such as a bridge out or trees blocking main roadways, is processed internally through an emergency management software program. After a brief meeting we will have a tour of the EOC and wrap it up with a tour of the Broward County Mobile Command Vehicle.

It should be a great meeting and we look forward to seeing everyone there. Talk in will be on the 146.910 repeater.
